Intrigued, he wrote to his friend Camille Bryen, a French painter, poet, and writer, a key figure in the post-war avant-garde, to ask for his opinion. He was also surprised to see that Bryen's name had disappeared from the final version of the program. Hausmann admitted to knowing nothing about the organizers, whom he ironically described as "joking students." He even hesitated to entrust them with his tapes of sound poetry, fearing that this new movement was merely a superficial imitation of Dada. This letter now stands as a testament to the ambiguous relationship between Dada and Fluxus. While the latter claimed the Dadaist legacy, Hausmann observed this new generation with caution and skepticism. This document thus captures a moment of transition: that in which one of the founders of the historical avant-garde looks with detachment at a movement which claims to extend his work, without yet being convinced that he truly shares its spirit.
"My dear Bryen,
On the mimeographed program of the FLUXUS festival in Paris, I found your name listed as one of the participants, but I can't find it on the printed program. These people put my name there without asking my permission, and I'm the first name on their program. Since I don't know for sure if they're neo-Dadaists or something else, and if their festival is even worth attending, I would be very grateful if you could tell me the reasons for removing me from the program, especially since I don't know if I should or even can give them my tapes. In any case, I don't know these gentlemen at all; they seem to be nothing more than prankster students.
With my best regards, your Raoul Hausmann
