The fourth session of this international congress, it took place from August 27 to September 5, 1869, and brought together scholars from numerous European and American countries.
The choice of Copenhagen was not accidental: Denmark was then playing a major role in the development of prehistoric archaeology, thanks in particular to the work of Christian Jürgensen Thomsen, J.J.A. Worsaae, and their collaborators. The classification of the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages, as well as the close association between archaeology, geology, and natural sciences, made Scandinavia a veritable laboratory for new research on ancient human societies.
This large photograph (albumen print) shows all the participants; it is mounted on a larger card bearing the title "INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY (Copenhagen 1869)"; the names of the 110 participants were noted in ink in the margins, and some of them (about ten) signed. Among the autograph signatures are those of: Jens Jacob Asmussen WORSAAE, Armand de QUATREFAGES, Alexandre BERTRAND, Paul CAZALIS DE FONDOUCE, Juan VILANOVA Y PIERA, Jules OPPERT, etc.
Rare document.
