Guy de Maupassant flattered by a glowing review published in La Figaro

Maupassant thanks a colleague for the very flattering article published in Le Figaro.

"Achille Heymann [the bookseller and publisher] revealed your name to me, which allows me to send you, knowing to whom I am addressing myself, my warmest thanks for the very flattering article you wrote about me in the supplement to Le Figaro. I cannot help but believe these praises exaggerated, but at the same time I cannot help but be extremely flattered, as no relationship between us could have influenced your opinion. With the expression of my deepest gratitude, please accept, Sir and dear colleague, the assurance of my devoted sentiments.".

Letter written on mourning paper with printed "GM" letterhead to his Parisian address "10, rue de Montchanin" where Maupassant lived between 1884 and 1889.

This period was Maupassant's most prolific: he published Une vie, Bel-Ami, Pierre et Jean, Fort comme la mort and many of his famous short stories.
