Joseph Sadoc Alemany (Vic, Catalogne, 1814/1888)Intéressante lettre du premier archevêque de San Francisco, Joseph Sadoc Alemany, en anglais, sur son installation au diocèse de San Francisco et ses difficultés pour faire face à la concurrence du culte protestant. Il avait été nommé le 29 juillet 1853, et le restera jusqu'en 1884.
Il adresse un rapport sur le diocèse de San Francisco « to which see our Holy Father has seen fit to transfer me from that of Monterey. And as it is not possible to find the new bishop elect of Monterey the Holy see has nominated me Administrator Apostolic of that diocess of Monterey […]. California is rich; but its wants are very great, and they do not give much time to prepare of them. The protestants are building many brick churches and many colleges; and I am grieved ti see, that I am not able to have a suffisant number of clergymen to do justice to the wants of our people. I should have twenty or twenty-five priests more for the two dioceses, and more churches and colleges. With your great aid, I have succeded in doing some, but this is far from meeting the necessities of California […] ».
